Trooper Krull Offers Advice On Driving In Fog

Northwest Iowa — For the past few days our area may have seemed like foggy old London with the amount of fog we’ve been experiencing most days, and the forecast says there is more fog to come for a few more days.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Kevin Krull offers some advice for driving in fog.

(As above) “Fog is one of those dangerous things that we don’t think about often until we’re right there in the middle of it. One of the best things to do is slow down. I can’t say it enough…slow down and give yourself that extra distance, because you can’t see almost hardly in front of your windshield sometimes. So give yourself that extra space and that extra time by just slowing your speeds down.”

Trooper Krull also advises against passing other vehicles when driving in foggy conditions.

(As above) “Do not…I cannot stress this enough…do not make passes if you can’t see. If you can’t see far enough down the road you are NOT to make that pass. I don’t care if it’s a clear passing zone and it’s normal flat, if you can’t see far enough down the road to make that safe pass, it’s NOT a good idea.”

He says in foggy conditions you should turn on your low-beam headlights. High-beams, in fog, are not your friend.

(As above) “You’ll find that high-beams don’t work. High-beams are going to flood that light too much out, so go ahead and turn your low-beams on and run with those. I had to remind my daughter…or she reminded me…that high beams don’t work in the fog and she learned by the new experience of  turning the low-beams on. So again, low beams and slow down.”

National Weather Service Forecasters are calling for foggy conditions in northwest Iowa at least through Saturday.
