Trooper: Officers To Focus On “Slow Down, Move Over Law”

Northwest Iowa — The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau and law enforcement agencies across Iowa will be participating in a special enforcement project next week.

Trooper Spokesperson Kevin Krull says it’s part of an effort to increase awareness of the state’s “Move Over Law,” which has been in effect since 2002.

The law requires motorists to change lanes or slow down if changing lanes isn’t possible when approaching a vehicle on the shoulder displaying flashing lights.

Penalties for violating the law include a fine of a little more than two hundred dollars and can include suspension of driving privileges from 90 days to a year in cases of property damage, bodily injury, or death.

Trooper Krull says they’ll just be out there doing their job.

He says they’ll also be looking for other violations.

The special “Slow Down, Move Over” enforcement will be taking place June 17th-19th throughout Iowa.

Trooper Krull made his comments on the KIWA Talk of the Town Program, which can be heard on weekday mornings at 8:30 on KIWA-FM 105.3. We also post a podcast of every Talk of The Town Program, and you can find those by clicking here.
