Trooper: Tall Corn Making Rural Intersections Dangerous

Northwest Iowa — The corn is getting taller — and the rural intersections are becoming more dangerous.

It happens every year. We grow tall corn in Iowa, which is great, but it also means visibility problems on rural roads, especially when both roads are gravel and don’t have the expanded sight lines that paved roads have. Iowa State Patrol Trooper Kevin Krull tells us more.

Uncontrolled intersections can be a problem even in town, as some people are unaware that they must yield to their right if neither vehicle has a stop or yield sign. Now put that out in the country with the tall corn, and you can see why there are problems, says Krull.

When the corn is shorter, you can sometimes see dust clouds, but it’s not wise to depend on those. The best idea, according to Krull, is to slow down, and expect there might be someone coming that won’t be able to stop, even if you do have the right of way.
