Trooper Tells Us What Will Be Legal With Phones In Cars After July First

Sheldon, Iowa — A new law passed this year by the Iowa Legislature means that as of July first, drivers in Iowa may not touch their phones.

We had a chance to talk to Iowa State Patrol spokesman, Trooper Kevin Krull recently and he says that coincidentally, April happens to be the perfect month to talk about a distracted driving law.

Krull says you can still make and take calls, but it has to be through your car’s infotainment center or a hands-free device so that you don’t have to touch the phone.

He gives us an idea of the current situation, and what the law will be as of July first.

We asked Krull if you can pull over to use your phone. He says, yes, but there is one stipulation.

Krull says some people say they can multitask. But he says that’s not the way it works.

Krull made his comments recently on the KIWA Talk of the Town Program, which can be heard on weekday mornings at 8:30 on KIWA-FM 105.3. We also post a podcast of every Talk Of The Town Program, and you can find those by clicking here.
