Two NCC Employees Honored By Community Colleges for Iowa

Sheldon, Iowa — Two Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) employees have been recognized with an honor.

The Community Colleges for Iowa has recently announced the 2023 winners of the annual Community Colleges for Iowa Awards. Two NCC employees were among the honorees.

The Community Colleges for Iowa tells us Karla Harris and Alicia Van Horsen are recipients of the 2023 Outstanding Faculty and Staff Awards. They say the recognition highlights their significant contributions to education across Iowa’s 15 Community Colleges.

The awards ceremony will take place at the inaugural Community Colleges Convention and Tradeshow on November 29, 2023, at the Hilton Des Moines, honoring exceptional service and leadership in the academic community.

Community Colleges for Iowa Executive Director Emily Shields says that the remarkable achievements of Iowa’s Community Colleges are “a direct result of the commitment and dedication of professionals like Harris and Van Horsen. Their efforts not only benefit their immediate students and colleagues but also serve as an inspiration across our statewide network.”

Harris’s nomination talks about her “innovative approach to teaching” and her “use of unique teaching strategies.” It says her work has been instrumental in helping students overcome challenges in math, particularly those in trade programs.

Van Horsen’s nomination calls her “The Architect of Student Success.” It says she plays a significant role at NCC and has been an integral part of the college for many years. It says her expertise in NCC’s learning management system, CANVAS, keeps “students connected, faculty supported, and staff serving students.”
