Sheldon, Iowa — At this point it appears that the unexpired term of Shawn Broesder on the Sheldon City Council will be decided by 2nd Ward voters.
On Thursday, a petition signed by ten residents of Sheldon’s 2nd Ward, was presented to the Sheldon City Office with the intention of forcing a special election to fill Broesder’s 2nd Ward council seat through the end of his term, which is the end of this year.
After the petition was received it was forwarded to the O’Brien County Commissioner of Elections, County Auditor Barb Rohwer. Friday morning Rohwer informed the City of Sheldon that the signatures on the petition were, in her belief, valid. That moves the matter on to a special election to fill that council seat, unless someone challenges the petition within five days. Only 2nd Ward residents will be eligible to cast a vote in that special election.
In addition to filing the petition for a special election, Madeline Kopel also submitted a letter of interest in being appointed to that position, presumably in case someone challenged the petition within five days.
The date for a special election has yet to be set and the matter will be taken up again at this coming Wednesday’s meeting of the Sheldon City Council.
City Manager Sam Kooiker tells KIWA that residents of Sheldon’s 2nd Ward will be the only people who can vote in the special election.
