Ames, Iowa (RI) — The volume of US pork exports is down about nine percent compared to this time a year ago — and Iowa State University ag economist Chad Hart says it’s not just trade tensions with China that caused the drop.
It’s happening at a time when America’s pork industry needs to sell as much pork as possible, according to Hart.
Hart says the US is facing export competition from countries, plus worries about the global economy.
In 2024, the United States sold three million metric tons of pork, followed by the European Union, which sold two-point-nine million metric tons of pork products. Brazil is the world’s third leading exporter of pork.
