Weather Could Spell Wet Basements, River Flooding

Northwest Iowa — Spring is on the way. And with it, come some weather worries and worries about flooded basements and rivers.

Lance VandenBoogart, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, tells us what they think is coming.

Right now, according to the National Weather Service, the snowpack in northwest Iowa contains between two and six inches of liquid equivalent. There is a chance of some snowfall as well, but at this time the main problem will probably be flooding, says VandenBoogart.

He tells us what they’ve been advising people to do who may be facing flooded basements.

According to VandenBoogart, the rivers may not respond so much to this event, but they are definitely a concern in the longer term.

He says the main time of concern is going to be Wednesday into Thursday. He says with all the water, there could even be brief street flooding, especially if the catch basins are full of snow and slush. He says to use caution when driving, and don’t drive through flooded roadways.
