Here’s a look at the precipitation timeline Wednesday night and early Thursday as this system moves through. The strongest winds will arrive through Thursday morning and begin diminishing by Thursday evening.
Wednesday will be the warmest day for at least a week. Warm air will be washed away by mixed precipitation and snow early Thursday. While snow amounts will be light on Thursday, they could produce travel impacts due to strong winds. The greatest impacts will be felt across southern Minnesota, Iowa, far southeastern South Dakota, and eastern Nebraska. After strong winds diminish, arctic air plunges south for the weekend into next week. This will be the coldest air of the winter season so far.
After the snow leaves the area, colder air filters southward by Friday. Even colder air moves in for the weekend and lingers well into next week. High and low temperatures will average nearly 20 degrees below normal, with wind chills below zero for multiple days.
