Winterfeld Gets 50 Years In Ireton Murder

Orange City, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man who was convicted earlier this year in the murder of a Cleghorn man at a rural Ireton residence has been sentenced to 50-years in prison.

On Monday of this week, 71-year-old Gregg Winterfeld was sentenced for killing Grant Wilson of Cleghorn at a rural Ireton residence on May 9, 2020. Court records indicate that Winterfeld and Wilson had spent the afternoon and evening drinking alcohol and got into an argument. Winterfeld was convicted of shooting Wilson in the head with a small caliber handgun, causing his death.

Winterfeld had originally been convicted of 2nd Degree Murder by a Sioux County jury in April of this year, but won a new trial based on an appeal citing a procedural error in the jury selection portion of that trial. The second trial resulted in the same verdict of Guilty of 2nd Degree Murder.

Winterfeld was sentenced in Sioux County District Court on Monday to a 50-year prison sentence. His earliest possible parole date will be in 35 years, when he is 106-years-old.
