Northwest Iowa — Even during the pandemic, people like to travel, especially during holidays. And since Independence Day is coming up next week, travel may be on the minds of many. But this is one of two seasons in Iowa — that being snow removal or road construction — and we’re in the road construction part of that.
So we thought it might be a good idea to check into where road construction might be occurring during your holiday weekend travel.
We will limit our construction to state, US, and interstate highways. Several county roads could be under construction as well.
In Lyon County, a project is just wrapping up between Rock Rapids and Larchwood on Highway 9. In fact, this could be done any day now, and could very easily be done before holiday weekend travel. At last report, a pilot car was in operation.
In O’Brien County, Highway 18 is under construction between Sanborn and Hartley. A detour is in operation.
In the Hawarden area, Highway 12 is under construction south of Hawarden to a little south of Chatsworth. Single-lane traffic in alternating directions is in effect with temporary traffic lights. It’s also under construction a little further south, near Sioux City. Flaggers are directing traffic.
In the Storm Lake area, Highway 71 is being worked on and the shoulder is closed south of Highway 7 for about six miles. But that could be done in the next few days.
One lane of Highway 20 is closed near Early for construction for the next few days as well.
Highway 75 is being worked on between Sioux City and Hinton, and one roadbed is carrying traffic heading in both directions.
I-29 and Highway 20 are under construction in Sioux City.
If you’re headed north and east, there is some construction in Minnesota to tell you about. I-90 is under construction near Blue Earth, and Highway 71 is under construction between Jackson and Windom.
If your travels take you into South Dakota, you should know that there is construction on Highway 50 between I-29 and Vermillion, Highway 46 west of Beresford, Highway 115 (Minnesota Avenue) between Highway 18 and Sioux Falls, I-229 between Cliff Avenue and 26th Street in Sioux Falls, Highway 42 west of Sioux Falls, Hwy 11 north of Sioux Falls, and I-90 on the north end of Sioux Falls.
