Sheldon, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host “Youth Mental Health First Aid” for adults who work with youth on Tuesday, March 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center.
Young adults often experience mental health and addiction challenges. This course introduces common mental health challenges for youth and reviews typical adolescent development. Participants will learn a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations.
Lori Korthals, human sciences specialist in family wellbeing with ISU Extension and Outreach says one in five teens and young adults live with a mental health condition. Whether you are a parent, educator, coach, school staff member, youth pastor, 4-H leader, or anyone else who works with youth on a daily basis, this program is for you.
Korthals said that the program will focus on equipping the adult leader participants with the skills and knowledge to recognize common mental health challenges in youth and teens, and how to connect those youth with appropriate care and support.
Korthals says the core focus of this training is what to watch for in youth behavior and how to ask the right questions in the right way to guide them towards the help they need.
