Pineapples were once luxury objects in Britain. When pineapples were first introduced there, about 200 years ago, they were so rare and amazing that they became status symbols. Rich people would display pineapples on their mantlepieces until they went rotten, and even build houses shaped like pineapples! It is unknown if this is why a yellow talking sponge in shorts has it as his home under the sea.
