It is National Macaron Day! Here are a couple of facts about macarons:

  1. The first macaron was made in Italy and not in France, contraty to popular belief. It found its way from Italy to France in 1533 when a chef of Italian noblewomen Cathrine De Medicis brought it over to France.
  2. The first method to making macarons is the Italian method, which involves whisking egg whites with heated sugar syrup to achieve a meringue. Icing sugar and sited almond flour are added and mixed with the egg to form a paste, also known as the macaron mixture.
  3. The second method to making macarons is the French method, which involves whisking egg whites until if forms a stiff-peaked merigue. Powdered sugar and almond flour are them added slowly and mixed to achieve the desired consistency.
