A study found that Americans read less than 100 hours per year – a big drop from the level we were at just a decade ago. The survey counted reading books, ebooks, newspaper articles and websites, but not social media.

A decade ago, Americans were reading over 500 hours a year. Today, many Americans would rather scroll social media, watch YouTube, watch streaming shows, or play computer or tablet games.

It’s National Popcorn Day! Here are five facts about popcorn:

  1. Popcorn can grow to be 30 times is original size when it pops.
  2. Popcorn kernels come from actual corn, but not the type you eat for dinner (or like the ones out in the Iowa fields). Only one variety of maize creates the kernels, which become the popcorn we all know and love: “zea mays everta”
  3. There are two different shapes of popcorn: the butterfly and the mushroom. The butterfly shape is best for powdery flavors such as white cheddar and buffalo, and the mushroom shape is most optimal for caramel flavors. The shape of mushroom popcorn holds heavy flavors like Apple Caramel quite well.
  4. How do popcorns pop? The answer is simple: pressure. The pressure from the heat placed on popcorn kernels causes a failure in the kernels skin, which results in the skin “popping”
  5. The oldest known popcorn was found in New Mexico: the discovery of small heads of corn and several individual popped kernels was made by Berbert Dick and Earle Smith in 1948. These kernels were carbon dated to be around 5,600 years old.

Napster, the revolutionary music file-sharing service, debuted 25 years ago in 1999. The service was created by college student Shawn Fanning and it quickly gained popularity, making it easy for music ethusiasts to download copies of songs that were otherwise registered on its network.

However, Napster’s operations were riddled with controversy. The service faced numerous legal battles over digital rights, with litigation from various angles, including the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Metallica, and Dr. Dre.

In 2001, the original Napster was shut down after a successful court injunction. Today, Napster is a paid music streaming service.

  2. Garlic, ginger and onion
  3. Chicken broth/stock and coconut milk – it is used for creaminess and flavor. It is recommended to use only one cup of coconut milk to avoid having the dish be too rich.

  2. Once the largest social networking site, Myspace rebranded in 2011, pivoting to focus on music and entertainment.
  3. Launched in 2011, Google+ was Google’s attempt at a social networking platform. It was shut down for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage.
  4. Clubhouse launched in 2019 as an audio-based social media app. It’s still around, but in April 2023 the company announced a 50 percent reduction in its staff.

If your New Year’s resolution is to drop weight, but you’re finding it hard to give up your love of junk food, we want to remind you that an Iowa science teacher ate nothing but McDonald’s for six months and lost 56 pounds.

This happened in 2014 and John Cisna’s cholesterol level dropped significantly. Cisna eslisted his students to help him plan a 2,000 calorie daily diet consisting only of food the fast food giant sold. They also tried not to exceed the recommended allowances of nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fat, calories and cholesterol.

During the experiment, Cisna also walked 45 minutes every day. Cisna says he was able to get healthier simply because he made smart choices.
