In 2013, a Michigan man survived being hit by a train traveling in excess of 100mph. Lifelong train engineers claim they’ve never seen anyone survive anything like that before. He was walking along a set of tracks, listening to music so loud he didn’t hear the oncoming train. The train was bound for Chicago, and hit him, throwing him 20 feet. It broke bones, crushed some vertebrae, and resulted in him needing surgery to put a plate in his neck, but he did survive, apparently remembering nothing of the accident.

I remember corded telephones in the shape of Garfield, the cartoon cat. In the 1980’s, these phones mysteriously began washing ashore on the coast of France, and continued to do so for 35 years. It wasn’t until a local farmer revealed a container ship carrying the feline phones had been hit by a storm, and ended up in a nearby secluded cave, and as the waves and nature over the years did the damage to the steel of the ship, the load of Garfield phones had found their way through the waves, washing ashore.

Well, the earliest record of the letter-grade system, which was implemented in Massachusetts in 1897, did use “E”. “E” meant you failed, however one year later, it was changed to an “F” because professors worried that students could think “E” stood for “Excellent”, whereas “F” clearly meant “Fail”.

Catnip repels mosquitos. Well, the essential oil in it does. Although your furry friend may cause you to have difficulty wrestling it away, catnip contains an essential oil that is much better at repelling mosquitos than DEET. At high doses, catnip repels about 49-59 percent of mosquitos, whereas the chemical commonly known as “DEET” repels only about 10% in the same dosage level. The downside of catnip, other than the struggle to get it away from the cat, is it loses its potency quickly and can be difficult to manufacture commercially in the need quantities.

There is an active volcano 50 miles from Denver, Colorado. At one time, it produced lava flows stretching for two miles, and yes, today, in 2023, it is indeed active, depending of course on how you define the term. In the technical, geological sense, any volcano that has erupted in the past 10,000 years is considered “active”. This volcano last belched lava to earth’s surface about 4,200 years ago. Scientists assure the public, however, that minus a global catastrophe on the scale of an asteroid strike, there’s no real danger of it erupting today.
