Knowledge Nugget:

Thanksgiving was all but a week and a half ago or so, and as we look toward Christmas, there is more and more Christmas music hitting the airwaves. One iconic season song, Jingle Bells, was originally a song about Thanksgiving in 1857. It was also the first song ever played in space. It was played by astronauts Walter Schirra, Jr, and Thomas P. Stafford.

Toys for Tots was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1947. A handmade doll was the first donation, and more than 5,000 toys were collected during that first drive. That is very generous, but pales in comparison to today. Presently, 18 MILLION toys are collected each year, and are distributed to over 7 MILLION less fortunate children.

Knowledge Nugget:

Yesterday we briefly talked about all new and better ways of hanging Christmas lights. One of the greatest, most iconic, Christmas movies of all time was released 33 years ago yesterday. That would be Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase. The movie has a slim bit of truth pointed out in it. That being that November and December are the two most dangerous months of the year because of holiday decorating injuries, 34 percent of which are falls. The source did stop short of mentioning hanging from a rain gutter or sending a piece of fascia board through a neighbor’s window, however.

Knowledge Nugget:

We just had a Parade of Lights just shy of a week ago. The Sheldon Fire Department’s ladder truck was full of bright, festive lights, and looked great with all the lights. Luckily the price has dropped for Christmas lights. Christmas lights used to be so expensive that they were RENTED, rather than sold. In fact, they were so expensive that an electrically lit tree was actually a status symbol in the early 1900’s. It was a lot less dangerous than those that couldn’t afford the expensive lights used…. candles.

Knowledge Nugget:

As we look outside, we see the first big snowfall of the season. The National Weather Service is very confident that snow will fall. A week and a half ago, Buffalo, New York got some heavy snow, but even at that, Buffalo with it’s lake-effect snow doesn’t claim the title of “snow capital of the US”. The snow capital of the United States is Stampede Pass, Washington. Each year it has an average snowfall of 430 Inches! When I do some quick math, that comes to just under 36 feet!

Believe it or not, money was actually printed on wood for a time in the United States! Today, the dollar is not actually made of paper, they are made of linen – denim. To be specific, it is made from the remnants of material from blue-jean manufacturing, which is what gives the dollar bill it’s signature “feel”.

We are in the final few hours of the Thanksgiving Pastor’s Pie Auction, and it’s been a great success so far. There’s been a lot of bidding to raise money for a great local cause. Today’s knowledge nugget is of course, Thanksgiving related. Pumpkin pie, although more than 50 million being consumed tomorrow, is NOT the favorite. The overwhelming favorite is Apple followed by Chocolate and Pecan. Pumpkin comes in fourth. The Guinness World Record holding pie was backed in 2010 by the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in Ohio. It included a whopping 1,212 pounds of pumpkin, 109 gallons of evaporated milk, 2,796 eggs, 525 pounds of sugar, 7 pounds of salt, and 14 1/2 pounds of cinnamon. After being baked, the pie weighed 3,699 pounds and measured 20 feet in diameter. It produced 5,000 slices.

Knowledge Nugget:

The TV dinner was invented thanks to Thanksgiving. In 1953, a Swanson employee accidentally orderted too much turkey – 260 tons too much! The frozen turkeys were taking up space in 10 refrigerated train cars when a company salesman suggested preparing and packaging the turkey with sides in a compartmentalized aluminum trays. Swanson sold 5,000 TV dinners in 1953. The following year, they sold 10 million! The first TV dinner costed 98 cents!
