Knowledge Nugget:

Monday is probably the least liked day of the week for most people, but something that changed the way we look at the world happened on a Monday. YouTube became a reality. YouTube is such a huge part of not just the internet, but of 21st century culture as a whole, which makes it hard to imagine a time when it didn’t exist. However, YouTube didn’t really become a reality until February 14th, 2005 – which was a Monday. On that day, YouTube’s domain came to life and has only grown and become a part of everyone’s life ever since.

Russian dictator Joseph Stalin edited photos for censorship. Long before Photoshop was a thing, Joseph Stalin had photos retouched to remove dead or missing people under his political purges. The Soviet Union tried to get rid of the memory of Genghis Khan. During the Soviet-era rule of the late 20th century, simply mentioning the great Mongolian conqueror’s name was a crime against the USSR. The Soviets removed his story from school textbooks and outlawed pilgrimages to his birthplace.

Today is Veterans Day. The first celebration using the term Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1947. Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized “National Veterans Day”, which included a parade and other festivities, to honor all veterans. The event was held on November 11th, which at the time was designated as Armistice Day. The first Armistice Day celebration was held at Buckingham Palace, commencing with King George V hosting a “Banquet in Honor of the President of the French Republic” during the evening hours of November 10, 1919. The first official Armistice Day events were subsequently held in the grounds of Buckingham Palace on the morning of November 11, 1919, which included a two-minute silence as a mark of respect for those who died in the war and those left behind.

Knowledge Nugget:

Today is election day! Everybody who is legally able to vote is encouraged to vote if they haven’t already. Who you vote for is up to you… just go vote! Election day has changed extensively in the past 200 years. 200 years ago, not only were eating, drinking, and parading common, but votes could be cast by public voice vote. Also, political parties would hand out pre-printed ballots for voters to cast, to ensure that people voted for a party ticket. It wasn’t until the 1890s, which was post-Civil War, post-Emancipation Proclamation, and post-Lincoln, that the Australian ballot, also known as the Secret Ballot, became commonly used in the United States.
