Sheldon, Iowa – December in Sheldon shines a little brighter thanks to Village Northwest Unlimited’s annual Christmas lights show.
What used to be a small, one-day idea with a couple of handwaves from nearby drivers has grown into a three-part masterpiece and community tradition people can cherish throughout the entire holiday season.
Barry Whitsell, current President and CEO of Village Northwest, has been at VNU for 21 years and has overseen the show since it began. His favorite part of the show is right upon entering the campus, where visitors are asked via a sign to tune their radios to 107.1 FM for the first part of the show.
The second show can be found on 106.1 FM.
The last scene does not have musical background via a radio source, so pay attention to the flashing lights.
The lights switched on the day after Thanksgiving and will continue through New Year’s Eve. The show goes on every night from 4:30 to 10 p.m. at 330 Village Circle in Sheldon. Visitors are asked to dim their headlights as they enter the campus, both to preserve the magic of the show and to respect the privacy of residents.
Barry can sum up the show in three words: Fun, family-oriented. And that’s exactly what they expect visitors to find as they roll through the displays, an experience that brings together faith, family, and joy this holiday season.
