Melvin, Iowa — The Iowa State Patrol and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a multiple-vehicle accident, which happened a mile south and two west of Melvin on Wednesday morning just before 8:00 a.m.
The incident actually involved at least two accidents. The initial accident involved three semi trucks, driven by a Sioux Rapids man, an Alvord man, and a Bigelow, Minnesota woman. The dense fog was a major factor in the accident, according to the preliminary report from the Iowa State Patrol.
The trooper’s report says one of the trucks stopped at a stop sign in the fog and then attempted a left turn, and the two trucks collided in the intersection. Another vehicle approaching the scene attempted to take evasive action and managed not to strike any vehicle, but while trying to back away from the scene apparently struck another vehicle.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office handled the other accident, which happened an eighth of a mile north of the initial accident scene and happened due to the road being blocked and traffic being backed up. Three more vehicles were involved in that accident.
It appears that no injuries were reported except for seatbelt discomfort. The trooper says that at least in the initial accident, injury was prevented by the wearing of seatbelts.
We hope to have the full details of the incident and update this story when they become available.
