Brazilian rain showers help early crop development

IARN — Brazil’s major crop areas continue to receive frequent rain showers as the country’s growing season continues.

In this week’s South American weather and crop update on the Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network, Allendale commodity broker Greg McBride runs down recent weather patterns in both Brazil and Argentina. Growers in these areas continue corn and soybean planting efforts.

“We’ve seen good rains in portions of Brazil,” said McBride. “Their soil moisture looks very good and it continues to be good for early crop development as they are planting their corn and bean crop this year. A little bit on the drier side for Argentina, but there are some very heavy rains that are in the forecast coming into the weekend and over the next week to two weeks. That will be something to watch. If those rains fall, Argentina will be in perfect condition to continue to plant and continue to look at early crop development.”

McBride talks about planting progress in Brazil and Argentina.

“With Brazil, I don’t have the exact numbers, but they are still slightly ahead of the five-year average for their planting pace which bodes well,” said McBride. “They continue to see the rain and that’s an area that needs to be under constant rain throughout the days and weeks so that they can move forward. It gets real dry real quick down there. In Argentina, they are ahead of the five-year average and in-line with where they were at last year at 36% planted for corn. That continues to move along as I said with those rains that are expected to fall.”
