Expert: Northwest Iowa Crop Conditions Mixed Due To Spotty July Precip

Northwest Iowa — We’ve been in drought conditions this summer, but some areas have had some really nice rains recently. As far as how that’s affecting this year’s crop, the news is not all bad, but it’s not all good either.

That from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Agronomist Joel De Jong.

He says rainfall amounts varied wildly in July. According to De Jong, some areas saw seven or eight inches of rain last month, while other areas saw less than an inch in the whole month.

According to De Jong, there are some other issues to be aware of.

De Jong says spider mites do better under hot and dry conditions, so they are more of an issue in the areas where the rains have missed.

He says soybean aphids may also be headed for our area.
