Expert: Soil Still Too Cold To Plant Corn, Moisture Okay

Northwest Iowa — In a basically normal year, many people would be starting to plant corn in our area. But this year, the soil temperature is a bit chilly for that.

That’s according to Iowa State University Crop and Field Specialist Joel De Jong.

We asked De Jong to peer into his crystal ball and tell us when he thinks the ground might warm up enough to plant corn more safely.

To many people who live in town, it would seem like — since we had so little snow this winter — that the ground might be really dry to start the growing season. Thankfully, De Jong says, the current moisture profile isn’t too bad.

According to Iowa State University data, the normal planting time for northwest Iowa is mid-April through mid-May.
