ISU Agronomist: Drought Starting To Stress Crops

Northern Iowa — Crops are starting to show signs of stress brought on by the drought.

Iowa Sate University Extension field agronomist, Angie Rieck Hinz sees it in the corn in her north-central Iowa area.

The bean crops is also impacted.

Hinz says some areas in her region are short four to five inches of soil moisture needed to produce a healthy crop.

Hinz says they need some rain soon to keep the crop conditions from getting worse.

According to the latest Crop Progress & Condition report, in northwest Iowa our topsoil moisture is faring better than the state as a whole, as we are 49% adequate, and 44% short, with only 8% very short. The state as a whole is 14% very short, 46% short, and only 39% adequate. According to the latest US Drought Monitor report, although the 4-county area remains in a drought, we are fairing better than other areas of the state.
