Northwest Iowa — One of the sure signs of spring is becoming more visible in northwest Iowa with each passing day. No, I’m not talking about robins, I’m talking about farmers in their field, planting seeds for this crop year.
Iowa State University and Outreach Field Specialist Joel DeJong says farmers have been chomping at the bit, but most of them have waited for the proper soil temperature before hitching up the planter and hitting the fields.
(As above) “You know, we’ve had a few here and there that have done a little bit but, in reality, we’re just at the starting line right now for many people.”
He tells KIWA that some area farmers hit the fields Friday, with more joining Saturday. But he expects farmers to begin planting in earnest on Monday.
(As above) ”We’re finally getting that soil temperature approaching the 50-degree range with a warm forecast. I think with that, we’re going to see a lot of people really get going here.”
With planting season upon us, motorists are reminded to drive with extra caution due to the increased number of farm implements you’ll encounter on the road this time of year.
