Weather Service Gives Farmers Glimmer Of Hope

Northwest Iowa — With the late planting dates many farmers experienced this spring, many of them have been hoping against hope that the first hard freeze of the fall would hold off as long as possible. Well, it’s now fall.

We asked Mike Gillispie, who is the hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, what they are predicting for the autumn season. While it’s difficult to make long-term weather predictions, he says based on the information they have at this point, the preliminary prognostication is positive.

Gillispie says chances are trending toward being a little wetter than normal. By the way, Autumn 2018 was NOT normal.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac agrees, at least for October. By the time we get to November, the Weather Service and the Almanac start diverging, with the Almanac calling for below-normal temps and below-normal precipitation.
