Alcester Woman Faces Felony Lottery Theft Charge After Incident In Hawarden

Hawarden, Iowa — An Alcester, SD woman has been arrested on a felony lottery theft charge after an incident in Hawarden.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Hawarden Police Department, 35-year-old Stefanie Zemanek of Alcester is accused of stealing a box of lottery tickets. She was arrested on Thursday.

In his statement, the officer says the theft allegedly occurred on July 16th. He says he was called to Casey’s in Hawarden on July 17th in reference to the theft. He says the store manager reported the theft, and through investigation and surveillance video, they believe that Zemanek took the tickets. Taken was a box of 20 tickets, but they were high-value tickets, valued at $50 per ticket for a total value of $1000.

Zemanek was charged with lottery forgery or theft of ticket, a class D felony. If convicted, she could face up to five years in prison.

She faces a preliminary hearing on the charge on August 5th.

At last report, Zemanek remained in the Sioux County Jail in Orange City in lieu of a $5000 bond.
