Storm Lake, Iowa — An Alta man died and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Sunday in Buena Vista County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened shortly after 5 a.m. at mile marker 162 on Highway 71. 27-year-old Derren Mauricio of Alta was traveling northbound on the highway in a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse. Mauricio’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck the driver’s side headlight of a 2019 Jeep Wrangler driven by 21-year-old Estevan Rodriguez of Alta. Mauricio’s vehicle came to rest on the east shoulder, and Rodriguez’s vehicle came to rest on the west shoulder.
Mauricio was pronounced dead at the scene. Mauricio had not been wearing a seat belt, according to the trooper’s report. His body was transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.
Rodriguez and a passenger in his vehicle, 30-year-old Lucero Martinez-Juarez of Early, were both injured and were transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. They were both wearing seat belts.
The report says that dense fog was present at the time of the crash, which reduced visibility. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident.
