Alvord, Doon Firefighters Extinguish Straw Loft Fire

Alvord, Iowa — Some straw in a loft was destroyed in a fire on Friday, August 1, 2025, near Alvord.

According to Alvord Fire Chief Tanner Van Middendorp, at about 4:30 p.m., the Alvord Fire Department was called to the report of a fire in a straw loft at 1961 Fig Avenue, a mile and a half east and a mile and a half north of Alvord.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the building. The fire chief reports that they discovered smoldering straw on a wire mesh ceiling, which was exposed to the outdoors.

Van Middendorp says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by Doon firefighters for a short time, as per their auto-aid agreement.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be sparks from a nearby tree-burning pile that may have landed in the straw on the open face of the building.

Chief Van Middendorp reports that the damage was limited to the straw.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for an hour or so.
