Ashton, Iowa — Several large round hay bales were destroyed in a fire on Saturday, September 27, 2025, near Ashton.
According to a press release, at about 2:40 p.m., the Ashton Fire Department was called to the report of 30 hay bales on fire at 4989 250th Street, about a mile south of Ashton.
Firefighters say they saw a small brush fire along with about 40 hay bales on fire in a grassy area as they approached the scene. Firefighters stopped the spread of the brush fire and bales. After that the Sheldon Fire Company was requested for tanker and manpower assistance. The owners of the properties assisted with a skid loader and loader tractor by spreading and breaking apart the bales.
No injuries were reported.
We are told the cause of the fire was a fire in a burn pile going out of control due to the slight winds and dry brush cover at the time.
They tell us 16 bales were completely saved and in total 50 bales were lost. The estimated value is about $4500.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office also assisted on the scene.
The press release says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about five hours. It says, as a reminder, please be very cautious with burning material this time of year, with everything drying up.
