Authorities Urging Extreme Caution As Ice Conditions Deteriorate With Warmer Temperatures

Arnolds Park, Iowa (KUOO) — Iowa DNR officials said recently that there might be a few weeks of ice fishing left in northwest Iowa. But now they are saying people need to use extreme caution if they are going ice fishing — due to the temperatures we’ve had, as they are causing rapidly changing ice conditions.

Blake Mills, a Dickinson County-based enforcement officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says conditions are starting to deteriorate in some locations.

He urges those venturing out onto the ice to have extra gear with them just in case.

Fortunately, Mills says, pretty much all of the permanent ice houses are off the lakes.

Warmer temperatures are expected through at least the next week or so, and officials say that will only further weaken the ice.
