Canadian Wildfire Smoke Causing Air Quality Concerns Locally

Regional – Smoke from Canadian wildfires has been visible over the region the past couple of days.

So far most of that has been aloft, but the National Weather Service says some of that smoke started reaching the surface this past Saturday and will likely linger into Monday.

An air quality alert has been issued for all of southwest Minnesota and is in effect through at least 6:00 p.m. Monday. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease like asthma, as well as those with heart disease, and children and older adults, may experience health effects. They recommend limiting prolonged or heavy exertion.

They also encourage everyone to reduce, or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution such as outdoor burning; and urge people to reduce vehicle trips and idling as much as possible. They recommend keeping windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors.

While no advisories have been issued for northwest Iowa, residents are urged to follow the same precautions.
