Sutherland, Iowa– A Cherokee woman was taken to the hospital after an accident near Sutherland on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 1:30 a.m., 32-year-old Melea Speelmon of Cherokee was driving a 2007 Cadillac southbound on Highway 10, a mile and a half south of Sutherland.
The report says that as Speelmon approached the curve of Highway 10, she over-corrected and entered the opposite lane, then swerved right, and the vehicle went into a rollover. It rolled on the asphalt and entered the south ditch and came to rest on its wheels, according to the report. The deputy says Speelmon exited the vehicle from the driver’s door as emergency services arrived.
The Sutherland Ambulance took Speelmon to Cherokee Regional Medical Center Hospital.
The Cadillac sustained $15,000 in damages.
The deputy says the investigation continues, and alcohol may have been a factor.
