Chicken Coop, Chickens Lost In Fire Near George

George, Iowa — A chicken coop and some chickens were lost in a fire near George on Saturday afternoon.

George Fire Chief Bill Sprock says the call came in about 3:15 Saturday afternoon to 1536 Kennedy Avenue. That’s about five and a half miles north of George.

Sprock says when they got there they found the building on fire was a small chicken coop/building used for raising chickens. He says fire also got into the grove due to the high winds that day of 45+ mph.

Sprock tells us a number of chickens were lost in the fire, and the building was destroyed, along with a number of trees.

He says no other injuries were reported.

He says they were there for between an hour and an hour and a half.

The Little Rock Fire Department and George Emergency Medical Service provided aid at the scene, says Sprock.

According to the chief, the cause is believed to be a heat lamp that got knocked over by the wind. He says the farmers had just cleaned it out and put new wood chips in the building.
