“Cinnamon Celebration” To Highlight 100th O’Brien County Fair

Primghar, Iowa — There’s going to be a yummy event at the O’Brien County Fair this year.

Organizers are calling it a “cinnamon celebration” for the 100th Anniversary of the O’Brien County Fair.

Sponsored by the O’Brien County Farm Bureau, the traditional cinnamon roll contest will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. Though the cinnamon rolls and the humid July weather may make things feel sticky, organizers tell us contest entrants and the public will be able to enjoy the festivities in the air-conditioned open class building on the fairgrounds in Primghar.

Registration will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The on-site judging will begin at 1:00 p.m. on July 24th. The public is welcome to enjoy the contest and judging, even if they did not enter. Two highly qualified judges will select first, second, and third place in two classes.

Class 1:  Cinnamon Rolls: Sticky, caramel, with or without nuts.

Class 2:  Cinnamon Rolls: Frosted on top only.

Monetary prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the top three entries in each class: 1st place and blue ribbon: $100.00; 2nd place and red ribbon: $50.00; and 3rd place and white ribbon: $25.00.

There is no cost to enter. A baker may enter both classes. The contest is open to contestants who reside inside and outside of O’Brien County. Judging will be based on flavor (50%); texture (20%); appearance (20%); and aroma (10%). Professional bakers are prohibited from competing. The entry must be prepared by the person exhibiting. The full rules can be found on page 14 of the Open Class Booklet on the fair’s website at OBrienCountyFairIowa.com.
