City Council Tables Setting Funding For Enforcement, Etc. At Old Auto Dealership

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in regular session on Wednesday afternoon.

The council approved the consent agenda. They approved the second reading and waived the third and final reading of some ordinance updates needed due to legislative and local changes. The liquor and beer ordinance, the public hearing requirements, the council compensation, and the mayoral compensation ordinances were all approved.

Two other ordinance updates were introduced and moved to their second reading — one dealing with service animals and one dealing with conflicts of interest. Another ordinance update dealing with zoning and subdivision was referred to the Sheldon Planning Commission.

The council voted to support an amendment to the Northwest Iowa Safety Group 28E agreement that would mean member cities could still leave the group, but instead of being able to do so every quarter-year, the change could only come annually.

The council also discussed what should be done about the former auto dealership property on Old Highway 60 North — at 420 North 2nd Avenue. An owner and another representative of the property were there to ask and answer questions. Caleb Farrell and Corey Osterbuhr spoke to the council. City Manager Sam Kooiker noted that progress had been made since a nuisance letter was sent out regarding weeds, junk, and junk cars. The owners said that all the vehicles there run and are licensed, but they were told that there are still too many of them and that if they were going to store vehicles as a business, it would require a zoning variance or change. They also reported that, contrary to what City representatives thought, there is electricity to the building and no one is living in it. Since progress was being made, the council voted to table the costs resolution for now. The owners did ask what kind of vehicles could remain, and they were told that they’d have to check into the legal terms, but informally, only vehicles that could be started and driven would be considered not “junk” vehicles, and that repairable vehicles would need to be repaired and moved in a timely manner, and not sit there for months.

City Manager Sam Kooiker also reminded citizens of the hazardous materials disposal trailer that will be in Sheldon on Tuesday, September 23rd.
