Rock Rapids, Iowa — Kids have been active this summer, and now that school is underway in most communities, there may be less going on outside — but kids will be using bikes, e-scooters, and more to get to and from school and then you’ll probably see kids riding on those things well into the fall — as long as the weather holds.
And people in some northwest Iowa towns are concerned about kids, especially younger kids who are riding some of the faster devices, such as e-scooters, who maybe aren’t familiar enough with the rules of the road to ride them safely.
Lyon County Public Health Nurse Melissa Stillson with Health Services of Lyon County tells us that’s why she suggested a safety course for kids who ride.
She tells us some of their goals.
The event is this Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot between the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Lyon County Ambulance Garage on Boone Street in Rock Rapids.
Stillson says she came up with the idea after seeing close calls mentioned on social media and talking to people around the county.
She says while the event is two hours long, they won’t be talking to the kids for two hours.
The free event is for kids ages 5-14. You can register your kid by calling Health Services of Lyon County at 712-472-8200. Bring your scooter, bike, or other equipment when you come. Stillson says parents are welcome and encouraged to attend with their kids.
The event is made possible by Health Services of Lyon County, the Lyon County Ambulance Squad, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, and Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital and Avera Clinic in Rock Rapids.
