Crop Report: Almost All of Iowa Corn Has Emerged

Northwest Iowa — Nearly all of Iowa’s corn crop has emerged.

The newest USDA Crop Progress Report for the state says 97 percent of corn has emerged, which is ahead of last year’s pace, and matches the five-year average. 98 percent of northwest Iowa corn has emerged. 84 percent of Iowa corn is rated good to excellent, down slightly from last week.

93 percent of soybeans have emerged statewide, which is one week ahead of last year, and two days ahead of the average. 92 percent of northwest Iowa soybeans have emerged. Six percent of the state’s soybeans statewide are blooming, and four percent are blooming in northwest Iowa. Soybeans rated good to excellent held steady at 80 percent.

Damaging hail and wind was reported in parts of northern Iowa last week. Field activities last week statewide included cutting hay, side dressing, and spraying crops.

79 percent of northwest Iowa topsoil has adequate moisture, down two percent from last week.

72 percent of northwest Iowa subsoil has adequate moisture, up seven percent from last week.

Nearly 4.5 days were suitable for fieldwork in northwest Iowa last week, compared to 5.5 days statewide.
