Crop Report: Lots of Planting Reported Last Week

Northwest Iowa — Another week with little or no precipitation and warm temperatures allowed for rapid planting progress in Iowa fields.

According to the state’s crop progress report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there were scattered reports of replanting as early planted crops in some areas had struggled to emerge due to the dry conditions.

Corn planted statewide reached 91 percent, 12 days ahead of last year, and four days ahead of the five-year average. 58 percent of corn has emerged, five days ahead of last year, and three days ahead of normal. In northwest Iowa, 96 percent of corn has been planted, with 65 percent emerged.

84 percent of the expected soybean crop has been planted, which is just over two weeks ahead of last year, and one week ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans emerged statewide reached 42 percent, eight days ahead of last year, and six days ahead of normal. In northwest Iowa, 88 percent of soybeans have been planted, with 49 percent emerged.

44 percent of northwest Iowa topsoil has adequate moisture, down nine percent from last week.

54 percent of northwest Iowa subsoil has adequate moisture, down eight percent from last week.

There were just over six days suitable for fieldwork in northwest Iowa last week, and just over 6.5 days were suitable statewide.
