Sheldon, Iowa — If you are a Sheldon resident and you have some stuff you need to get rid of (and let’s face it, who doesn’t?), the deadline to sign up for your virtual flag for Sheldon’s annual cleanup week is Tuesday.
We talked with Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker, and he tells us about it.
Unlike some other cities that have banned or prevented scavenging other people’s junk piles to find hidden treasures in some way — Sheldon has gone the other way, and has actually embraced the scavenging tradition, says Kooiker.
Pick up begins Monday, September 15th. Again, your form and payment must be received or placed in the west side drop box by Tuesday, September 9th. Kooiker tells us you must not set out items before Friday evening, September 12th. Pick up begins Monday, September 15th. The form is available on the City of Sheldon website at sheldoniowa.gov.
Many kinds of items can be disposed of through the annual Sheldon Clean Up. They’ll take electronics and appliances for $15 extra per item, including air conditioners, clothes washer/dryers, dehumidifiers, humidifiers, freezers, furnaces, stoves, microwaves, dishwashers, refrigerators, water heaters, softeners, computer towers, monitors, printers, televisions, DVD players, VCRs, copiers, electric grills, treadmills, and organs/synthesizers. A monitor and a tower are considered two items. Keyboards and computer mice are not considered electronic items.
They will also take metal, tree branches, and brush. If you’re not sure if an item will be accepted, you can contact the city office or check the website.
Kooiker also reminds Sheldon residents that if they find some items like paint, cleaners, pesticides, burned-out fluorescent tubes, CFL bulbs, mercury thermometers, or other hazardous materials, those are NOT accepted during Cleanup Days; however, the Household Hazardous Materials trailer is coming to Sheldon later in the month for those types of things.
The trailer will be parked north of the Sheldon Public Library — again, on Tuesday, September 23rd. Again, you can call the Sheldon City Office for more information at 712-324-4651.
Kooiker made his comments on Friday on the KIWA Talk of the Town Program, which can be heard on weekday mornings at 8:30 on KIWA-FM 105.3. We also post a podcast of every Talk of The Town Program, and you can find those by clicking here.
