Sioux Center, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been arrested on a felony OWI charge in Sioux Center.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sioux Center Police Department, 30-year-old Peter Baccam of Des Moines is accused of driving while under the influence for the third or subsequent time. He was arrested on Sunday.
In his statement, the officer says he stopped the vehicle due to a rear license plate light being out. But he also found that Baccam didn’t have a valid driver’s license. He says he also exhibited signs of impairment and admitted to having smoked marijuana only an hour before, having used cocaine two days before, and drinking an alcoholic beverage before driving. A preliminary urine test tested positive for alcohol, THC and cocaine.
Baccam was charged with operating while under the influence, third or subsequent offense. Since it would be his third conviction, it was raised to a class D felony. If convicted, Baccam could face up to five years in prison.
He faces an initial hearing on the charge on June 9th.
Baccam was booked into the Sioux County Jail in Orange City, and was released the next day after posting bond.
