Doon, Iowa — The Doon Fire Department was called out for two fire calls on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
According to Doon Fire Chief Adam Van Engen, at about 12:20 p.m., the Doon Fire Department was called the first time to the report of a control of a controlled burn of an old house lost at 3312 260th Street, five miles east of Doon’s south side– or two miles east of Highway 75. He tells us people on the scene were burning the old house on purpose, but the fire started getting out of hand.
The chief says the fire had spread from the old house to a pile in the grove and a garbage pile between hog buildings. He says they tried to get ahead of the fire, working their way upwind.
Van Engen says no injuries were reported to people, pets, or livestock.
The fire department was assisted by the Hull Fire Department.
Chief Van Engen reports that there was nothing of value damaged.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three and a half hours.
Then, that evening, Doon firefighters were called to 2587 240th Street for the report of a shed on fire.
He says the call went out just before 7:30 p.m. An open-front unused hog building was seen to be fully engulfed as they rolled up.
Van Engen tells us they believe the fire was caused by remnants of a grass fire from the day before. He says there was basically nothing in the building, but it was totaled in the blaze.
He says that the Alvord and Inwood firefighters were also paged, but they turned around the Inwood firefighters when they knew what they were dealing with. The Alvord firefighters did provide assistance, however.
He says firefighters were on the scene of the second fire for about two hours.
