Doon Man Airlifted From Scene Of Alvord Area Crash

Alvord, Iowa– A Doon man was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital directly from the scene after a crash near Alvord on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 9:45 a.m. , 68-year-old Gail Van Berkum of Doon was driving a 1999 Ford pickup westbound on 210th Street or A34, about three quarters of a mile west of Alvord.

The report says that Van Berkum encountered icy road conditions and lost control. His pickup went off the road to the right and rolled, coming to rest on its roof. Van Berkum was the sole occupant.

The Sanford AirMed 9 helicopter took Van Berkum to Avera McKennan Hospital. The report says are his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

Van Berkum’s Ford pickup sustained $2500 in damages, and was considered totaled in the crash.

Van Berkum was charged with failure to maintain control.
