Sheldon, Iowa — The stretch of pre-spring weather that some are fond of calling “false spring” is about done — at least for now — as winter weather again takes aim at northwest Iowa.
The National Weather Service has predicted that starting at noon this Thursday, snow and patchy blowing snow are expected. They say they expect we’ll get between 3 and 6 inches in the Sheldon area.
Similar weather is forecast for nearby portions of northwest and west central Iowa, northeast Nebraska, and southeast South Dakota. They say by 6 a.m. Friday, the winter weather should have dissipated.
Weather service officials tell us to plan on slippery road conditions. Mainly drifting snow is expected, but in areas prone to blowing snow, the snow may be lofted and briefly reduce visibility.
While it will be colder than it has been, the temps will start out above freezing on Thursday, and the combination of temperatures that warm and drifting snow can cause snow to adhere to roads, creating icy patches. They also warn that the hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute.
Officials advise you to slow down and use caution while traveling. Officials also advise not to use your phone while driving.
