Farmers May Encounter Southern Rust, Other Issues In Corn

Northwest Iowa — Silage harvest has started, and in some areas of the state, corn harvest has even started. We talked recently with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Agronomist Leah Ten Napel, and she says there is something that farmers should probably watch out for in their cornfields.

Southern Rust is a fungus, so if it’s found during the right time of the growing season, fungicides are often suggested.

Ten Napel says there are some other things to look out for as well.

She says with the great growing season we’ve had, farmers are optimistic about what the yield monitors will be showing.

If you have questions or concerns, Ten Napel can be reached through the Plymouth County Extension office in Le Mars.
