Sheldon, Iowa — Recently on our Talk of the Town program, KIWA’s Tom Traughber spoke with Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls about holiday fire safety.
Every year, usually around Thanksgiving and Christmas, people use turkey fryers, but people don’t necessarily understand how to use them, says Huls. And that often causes fires.
Huls says check how much liquid the turkey is going to displace by doing a little experiment before you even fill the fryer with oil.
Many people will be decorating for Christmas soon, and that has it’s own set of hazards, says Huls.
Huls also advises you to put your Christmas lights on a timer or a smart plug that turns them off after a certain time, so you can’t forget to turn them off when you go to bed. And, if you have a real tree, don’t forget to water it. Dry trees are much more flammable than watered ones.
