First Day To File Papers For City/School Election Is Monday, August 25th

Northwest Iowa — If you want to toss your hat in the ring for the northwest Iowa school board and city council positions, your opportunity starts next week. Some mayors’ seats are also up for election.

Nominating positions may be picked up at your County Auditor’s Office, starting on Monday, August 25th. A varying number of signatures is required, depending on which position you are filing for. The deadline for submitting nomination papers is September 18th.

The general election is on Tuesday, November 4th. Elections of school board members, community college board members, city council members, mayors, and other questions may all be on your ballot.

The Secretary of State advises that you can check your voting location by clicking here. If you have questions, you can contact your county auditor’s office. Find that contact information here. Find the County Auditor List, click “more information,” and find your county in the list.

Absentee ballots will be available. The first day to file an absentee ballot request form is actually next week as well — Tuesday, August 26th. However, ballots cannot be mailed out until over a month later. The first day they can be mailed out (and the first day you can vote in person at the auditor’s office) is October 15th. If you want to vote by mail, the county auditor needs to receive your official request form by October 20th.

The last day to vote in person at the auditor’s office is November 3rd. The deadline for the auditor’s office to receive your completed absentee ballot is election day, November 4th.
