For The First Time In Many, Many Years, Iowa Appears Set To End Year With Fewer Than 300 Traffic Fatalities

Northwest Iowa — There’s good news to report when it comes to traffic fatalities in Iowa as we wrap up 2025. Kevin Krull of the Iowa State Patrol says we appear to be on track to meet a major milestone.

Krull says the 300 mark is really only a preliminary goal.

He says we need to keep our eyes on the prize every time.

Krull cites one factor in particular for the reduced fatalities.

Krull reminds us that driving defensively is “driving for the other driver.” Just plan that every driver you encounter is going to do something wrong. Assume that they’re impaired. Assume that they are distracted. Assume that they are inexperienced, and assume they will make poor decisions. Then, in your mind, come up with what you would do to counter that bad driving or those bad choices at that instant. And think about that with every driver you encounter. If you’ve already thought about what you will have to do, it’s that much faster to do it if you end up needing to.
