Paullina, Iowa — Four area fire departments were called to help put out a fire on Thursday near Paullina.
Paullina Fire Chief Ryan Harper tells us his department was paged to 4621 Pierce Avenue at about 2:40 on Thursday afternoon for a barn on fire.
He says when firefighters arrived, they found active fire and smoke coming from the building. Firefighters started an exterior attack on the building due to a large amount of fire when they arrived, says Harper. He says firefighters from Granville, Archer, and Primghar were paged for manpower and water to aid with the extinguishing of the fire. An excavator was also called in to help support the extinguishing efforts of the fire departments.
The chief says they also found livestock being held near the barn and firefighters were able to get a gate open and move them to a pasture nearby.
The building and its contents were a total loss, and the house on the property also received some heat damage to the siding.
Chief Harper tells us firefighters were on the scene for just over three hours. The cause of the fire is unknown but is believed to have started from equipment being stored in the barn.
