Four Individuals Rescued from Big Sioux River Near Oak Grove

Hawarden, Iowa — Four people are safe after being rescued from the Big Sioux River near Hawarden Sunday.

The Sioux County Emergency Management and Sheriff’s departments tell us that at 6:00 p.m., Sioux County Conservation, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, and Sioux County Emergency Management responded to a call for assistance on the Big Sioux River near Oak Grove Park involving four individuals in two canoes. The group was unable to paddle upstream to the boat ramp to rejoin the rest of their party.

Using the Emergency Management drone, responders from Sioux County Conservation located the stranded canoeists downstream along the river. All four individuals were safely brought to shore with assistance from rescue crews. One person was transported by the Hawarden Ambulance to Hawarden Regional Healthcare for treatment of low blood sugar.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Sioux County Conservation, Sioux County Emergency Management, Hudson Fire Department, and the Union County Sheriff’s Office all assisted at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office thanked all responding agencies for their quick action and teamwork in ensuring a safe outcome.
